MMWO appeals for enquiry into refusal to admit patients from Thoubal to hospitals

TMB Report

IMPHAL: The Thoubal Moijing branch of Manipur Muslim Welfare Organization (MMWO) has regretted that a patient from Thoubal district died after he was deprived of emergency medical care at different health centres on the ground that he was from a district which is witnessing a spurt in local transmission of Covid-19.

In a press release signed by its general secretary, Md Ayub Khan, the organization stated that Covid-19 is rapidly spreading in every corner of the world and the scenario is not different in the districts of Manipur particularly Thoubal district, where the people are undergoing immense difficulties and suffering due to rise in number of cases.

Amidst this critical situation, another burden was added to people from Thoubal district as they were refused admission in different hospitals in Imphal and doctors there also refused to provide them medical treatment. It is very unfortunate that a life was lost because doctors who are regarded as serving humanity refused to treat him, the note said.

He further raised a question over what the public perception will look like if hospitals continue to ignore treatment of patients from areas recording local transmission of Covid-19 because of apprehension of medical providers getting affected.

If the patients of Thoubal district are not welcomed for treatment by hospitals in the state’s capital then the state government and concerned authorities should arrange a place for treatment for patients from the district at the earliest, said Md. Ayub Khan. The organization asked whether there is a standing official recommendation of sorts stipulating that the patients from Covid-19 affected area should not be admitted or allowed to undergo treatment in common health care facilities, and if so the official instructions should be made available to the public. He appealed to the state government to launch an enquiry against the doctors and hospital administration that had refused treatment and admission to two individuals from Thoubal district.

The organization agreed that the number of Covid-19 cases in some part of the district is increasing day by day because the people there have not properly followed the SOP properly given by the Government.

An appeal was made to all the family members of Covid-19 positive patients to test for Covid-19 as well as to take up mass testing and sanitization of all the affected areas at the earliest. Following the SOP is a much necessary and important personal drill at this hour, he said. Police could not control all the public, the particular people of Thoubal district must control themselves, added Md. Ayub Khan.
