IMPHAL: Senior Congress MLA Govindas Konthoujam has resigned from the membership of the Manipur Delimitation Committee, citing that the committee would not act to the tune of public sentiment.
Addressing reporters at his Ningthoukhong residence, MLA Govindas Konthoujam said that he had resigned from the committee as he strongly felt that the committee would not listen to his voice when he raise issues in public interest.
He, however, lauded the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly for nominating him as a member of the committee. Despite his resignation, he said he has no objection to nominating any Congress representative as member of the Committee.
It is no use being a member of the committee in such a trend of anti-democratic activities and lawlessness. I have taken the decision to resign from the committee which will not address my voice. If I am a member of the committee, people will definitely blame me too when the committee acts against the aspiration of the people. My decision to resign is to avoid public blame, Govindas claimed.
Stating that the possibility of losing four Assembly constituencies in the valley as a result of the delimitation process have triggered a strong apprehension among the people, he said the ruling party is yet to come out with a concrete statement in this regard. There seems to be irregularities while constituting the committee. Membership in the committee is not proportionate. No formal information was given to the CLP leader regarding nomination of members for the committee. Although the state is one inhabited by different communities, the committee has no members representing other communities. Ruling BJP members dominate the committee, he added.
