Mid day meal workers to support strike

TMB Report

IMPHAL: The Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Union Manipur (MDMWUM) has assured to give its support to the general strike of the Central Trade Union on November 26 in the state against the Anti-Labor policy of the central government, specifically regarding the non-release of the honorarium of the state Mid-day meal workers (cook) since April 2020.As per the statement of MDMWUM made by its president Y. Indrani Devi during a press meet held at Irawat Bhawan Complex the honorarium for the mid-day meal workers have been kept pending since the month of April 2020 although they are currently enjoying a miserly wage of Rs 1000 per month for namesake  for 10 months in a year. The union has approached with a memorandum towards the concerned department and the minister to release its pending honorarium before Ningol Chakkouba which is celebrated as the biggest festival of the state. However, the concerned authority remained deaf and mute to its beckoning without any positive responses which has discouraged and brought the emotional distress to the workers, she added. While, the honorarium for the mid-day meal worker in the other states have been even increased by adding the surplus of state budget on the workers’ wages, Manipur has been detaining the fund even though the centre had already sanctioned it, she added.Further, it mentioned that the central trade union and mid-day meal worker including the workers affiliated to All India Federation of Mid-day Meal (AITUC) also pressurized the concerned government authority for several times to grant the mid-day meal worker worker category, social protection and to give the needed wages. The demands are appropriate as the policy of the present ruling government has hugely cheated the residential workers, she added.
