IMPHAL: The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Thursday has taken up a Suo-Motu case no 1 of 2020 regarding the death of a co-accused of Washima murder who was found hanging based on news published in some local newspapers on February 13.
In the proceeding, the commission minutely read and examined the contents of the news items and was of the view that the said incident is a serious violation of the right to the co-accused namely Md. Sahid, 25 years of age son of Md. Ethem of Yairipok Chamgamdabi Mathak Leikai and his right to personal security while in Central Jail Sajiwa, which are guaranteed by Article 21 of the commission of India read with the relevant prison laws and Cr. Pc provision.
Taking serious note on the matters, the commission has asked DGP Manipur to submit a detail report on the said incident before the commission on or before February 24, 2020 for further proceeding and also to instruct IGP (Prison) Manipur to be present at Central Jail Sajiwa on Honourable Acting Chairperson’s visit for enquiry on February 14 into the said incident. The MHRC has sent a copy of the proceeding along with the news item to DGP for necessary action
