Imphal: A meeting in connection with illicit poppy and ganja cultivation in hill districts was held on Tuesday at Police Headquarters (PHQ), Manipur chaired by Director General of Police, Manipur L.M. Khaute with the village chiefs of 16 villages of Kangpokpi district.
The meeting was also attended by other senior police officers, including Addl. Director General of Police (Int.), Manipur Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, IPS; Inspector General of Police, Zone-III Lunsieh Kipgen, IPS; Inspector General of Police (Int./NAB), Manipur K. Radhashyam Singh, IPS; Deputy Inspector General of Police, Range-III K. Kabib, IPS; Superintendent of Police, Imphal East District, Manipur H. Jogeshchandra Singh, IPS; Superintendent of Police, Kangpokpi District, Manipur Hemant Pandey, IPS and Superintendent of Police, Narcotics and Affairs of Border, Manipur W. Basu Singh, MPS.
During the said meeting, an extensive interaction with the village chiefs was done.
Manipur Police Department appealed to the Village Chiefs not to cultivate illicit poppy/ganja plants and to co-operate with them in the drive against drugs including poppy/ganja cultivation for making Manipur State a drug free state.
Manipur Police Department also shared penal provision under ND&PS Act for involvement in such activities.
The Village Chiefs also shared their grievances and strongly requested for alternative means of livelihood and developmental works in their villages.
In this regard, Manipur Police Department has informed the Village Chiefs to furnish details of alternatives means of livelihood of their respective villages through the concerned Superintendent of Police.
The meeting which started at 11.30 am continues till 1.30 pm.
Such meetings will continue till we interact with all the Village Chiefs where poppy/ganja are cultivated and another such meeting will be held on September 17, 2020 at 11.30 am at PHQ, Manipur, Manipur Police Department informed.
