IMPHAL: The Joint Action Committee against forced construction of Mapithel Dam has announced a 48 hour total shut down along the Imphal-Ukhrul road from midnight of February 17 till February 18.
Maithel Dam Affected Headman Chiefs and Elders Organization Chairman M Ngaranmi while talking to reporters at Manipur Press Club said that the organization on January 24, 2020 submitted an ultimatum to the Chief Minister and Water Resources Department for entering a memorandum of agreement regarding the already agreed terms and points in principle in a meeting held at the CM Secretariat on November 19 2018. In the meeting, the government agreed to take up rehabilitation programmes and provide economic livelihood packages to the affected villagers. However, the state government is still reluctant to enter into a MoA despite having been submitted the ultimatum.
Around 2000 families of 23 villages were affected by the construction of the Mapithel dam. As such, the affected villagers are experiencing a hard life as their lands have been submerged in the water. Left with no option for survival, the affected families are planning to take up illegal activities like cultivation of poppy plantation, quarrying of sand and stone, he added.
