Lockdown prompts sand, stone mining, turning Thoubal River muddy

Thoubal: With the resumption of illegal sands and stones quarrying at different areas of Thoubal river in the wake of the present Covid-19 lockdown, Thoubal river now flows muddy water, states Thoubal River Conservation Committee (TRCC) in a press release.

The release further stated that illegal sand and stones quarrying using heavy machines were came across by members of TRCC during a secret inspection at different areas.

Due to Covid-19 lockdown many who are without work and income and who are unable to buy water/drinking water are left with their hand on their heads and above that local ponds dried up season has added more hard time, the release states.

The release also stated that as the District Administrations and district police are engaged on duty to contain from Covid-19, the previous mafia/gangs took the advantage and began the illegal work of quarrying at the Thoubal river.

Manupir High Court has even imposed ban on sands and stones quarrying at most of the major river including Thoubal river and even the quarrying order issued by the concern government department has even terminate by the court, the release states.

TRCC appeals the High Court of Manipur and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh who is also holding the portfolio of Forest and Environment to intervene at the matter at the earliest.

The release further stated that TRCC will not waste the time of the district administrations and law enforcing agencies posted along the river by filing complaints at this hard time from Covid-19.

Instead TRCC along with the public will apprehend the excavators, trucks and dumpers who are taking part at the mafia while plying on the road and those who found guilty of unlawful activities along with the vehicles, their details will be hand over to High Court through amivus curiae, the release states.

“Authority concern must not forget that innocent public have the right to arrest or apprehend a criminal or unlawful activist under CrPC Section 43”, TRCC stated.
