IMPHAL: The authority of Lamkang Village Expansion/Construction Affected Compensation Committee has urged the state government to take stringent actions against government officials particularly the Chandel DC whom it charge of actively pursuing manipulation in matters regarding pending compensations to be given for the Asian Highway 01 expansion.
In a press release issued by Lamkang Village Khunou Committee Chairman Sankhil Momo Darnong it was stated that the Lamkang Khunou Compensation Committee expressed strong displeasure over the attitudes of Chandel DC Krishna Kumar. Instead of finding solution for the affected households where the compensation is due, the DC went about threatening the affected household members and government employees in the village saying that they would face dire consequences if they go about hinging on the issue of compensation, mentioned the press release
It was further stated that the village authority is also greatly perturbed by the attitudes of Chandel DC where he told the villagers individuals that they will not get any compensation at all if they do not accept the unfairly amount calculated earlier. It was also mentioned that even though numerous requests were made by the villagers so that the impasse is resolved through talks, the indifferent attitudes of Chandel DC has made it impossible for peaceful settlement of the issue.
Regardless of their sentiments supporting peaceful settlement, commando units were also sent by the Chandel DC to intimidate the village folks wherein the village cemetery was partially destroyed, added the press release.
The press release also claimed that grievances of the village authority on the land compensation were not carefully heard by the DC Chandel which led to confusion among state government officials. In a letter no. 4/6/LA/2017/(CDL)-Com(rev) dated 9th June 2020 sent by revenue department to Chandel DC, clarification was asked by department along with instruction to furnish a detailed report of the cost escalation of the compensation which was unduly reported by the Chandel DC in the first place. However, to date, no reply from DC is received.
The village authority has warned that the failure to resolve the issue within a week of the issuance of the press release would invite strong resentment from the village authority and activities that will be obstructive towards the highway expansion project. Such delaying is against the right to fair compensation to the villagers, added the press release.
