IMPHAL: In celebration of the 70th birthday of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, ICAR-KVK Imphal West has observed Poshan Abhiyan 2020 at ICAR Lamphelpat.
In a press release of ICAR-KVK, it was stated that the function focused on the importance of Pushan Abhiyan, distribution of seeds for nutritional garden to Anganwadi workers and woman farmers and an agricultural seminar on Biofortified Varieties in Nutrition, Nutri-thali for Balanced Diet, Models of Nutri-garden and Package of Practices for Vegetable crops.
The function was inaugurated by minister of education Dr Th. Radheshyam Singh in presence of director of directorate of Social Welfare Ng. Uttam Singh, Joint director ICAR Manipur centre Dr I. Meghachandra Singh and programme coordinator KVK Imphal West Kh. Hera Singh on the dais.
In his inaugural address as Chief Guest, Minister Dr. Th. Radheshyam Singh thanked Anganwadi workers for their efforts and dedication to fulfill the dream of the Prime Minister for a malnutrition free India by 2022 under Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyan and also added that their honorarium was less due to paucity of fund.
Further, he declared that the New Education Policy 2020 which will be effective from this year comprises many good components of care and good education for children of tender age, and this policy will give benefits of early childbirth care and education from 3 years of age onwards in many parts of the country.
The Guest of Honor Ng. Uttam Singh mentioned in his speech that the work of Anganwadi under the Social Welfare Department this year will focus on identification under nourished children and their treatment, nutria- gardening/kitchen gardening and awareness and care of children for the first 1000 days from birth. Special care for a balanced diet is necessary for the infant’s up to 1000 days old because 80% of the human brain develops during this period, he added.
He continued to mention that the infants up to 6 months should be better fed with mother’s milk only and then be supplemented with balanced diet, while the general public has a misconception of balanced diet to be expensive but there is nothing of that sort except that it should contain five components viz starch, pulse, oil, sugar and milk, he added.
Dr. I Meghachandra Singh in his presidential address appealed to increase intake of brown rice instead of well polished rice for health because rice bran contains protein and other nutrients. On this occasion, a newsletter (January-June2020) for KVK Imphal West and a Folder Leaflet on Scientific Pig Farming in Manipur by Dr. R.K. Nirmala Devi was published and the seed packets distributed were sponsored by IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative)
The function was attended by 40 Anganwadi workers, 20 officials including Joint Director, CDPOs & Supervisors and 20 SHG women apart from KVK and ICAR staff.
