IMPHAL: With election campaign gaining momentum in Saitu Assembly Constituency for the upcoming By-election in November, unconstitutional activities have reportedly started to crop up in the constituency.

As per reports, several rounds of gunshot were reportedly fired during a public meeting of INC candidate of Saitu AC in Kangchup area in Saitu AC under Kangpokpi District on Wednesday at around 1:00 pm.

The incident reportedly occurred when suspected Kuki militant who are allegedly under suspension of operation, i.e.. KNO/KRA cadres fired five rounds of bullet in the air during a public meeting of INC candidate Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip at Twibul public ground in Kangchup area.

The INC candidate public meeting was held in connection with the upcoming AC by-election at K. Geljang village in Saitu AC under Kpi District.

It was reported that underground militant outfit allegedly belonging to Suspension of Operation and an entity of the Tripartite Talk under KNO blank fire several rounds of bullet to disrupt the meeting.

And due to the disturbance, the INC meeting was shifted to Twibul Public Ground where it was successfully held without any untoward incident.

Several empty bullet shells were recovered from the spot of gunshot at K. Geljang village in Kangchup area in Saitu AC under Kpi District.

“This is nothing but an act of cowardice, that too during the public meeting. I strongly condemn the act. I appeal our the state Chief Minister to act against such unlawful activities”, said the INC candidate Lamtinthang Haokip.

“I am deeply appalled on hearing the incident firing of gun on the public meeting of Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip, INC candidate for the upcoming 51-Saitu By-election today at K. Geljang village. He gave the best of his time in Delhi for the cause of the Kuki and tribal in Delhi under my stewardship”, said Paunou K. Zou, former President of All India Tribal Student Association, Delhi.

The local supporters of the INC candidate doubt the unconstitutional act to be a handiwork of the BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip and his supporters.

On his Facebook page, Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip wrote, “Gunshots were heard during the Public Meeting held today at Kangchup. I strongly condemn this cowardly act. The said meeting venue is few hundred metres away from Assam Rifles Camp. Is this BJP’s strategy to subdue the voices of the mass? Shame!!”

“Empty bullet shells recovered from the spot of gunshot at Kangchup. This is nothing but an act of cowardice, that too during the public meeting.I strongly condemn the act!! I appeal our Hon’ble CM to act against these unlawful activities,” the INC candidate stated.
