IMPHAL: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the gang rape and brutal killing of Echal Thambou has thanked the Imphal West judge dealing with the case for rejecting the bail applications of the five accused who are in custody. At the same time, the JAC also extended its appreciation to the state government for giving an assurance that charge sheets will be filed against the accused within two months.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul on Wednesday the JAC Co-convener Phusam Izaz stated that the five men had filed petitions in the court in a bid to push for bail but the court rejected their bail applications. He also appealed to the concerned department of the State police to put the absconding accused involved in the bizarre rape and murder behind bar at the earliest.
Narrating the tragic incident, he recalled and said that the girl had left her house after receiving a phone call on September 2, 2020 night and failed to return home. However, the next early morning, she was found in a semi-conscious condition, and scantily clothed. She was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), where she died of health complications on September 3, 2020.
The co-convener of the JAC while recalling the brutal incident reiterated condemnation and prayed that such incident never happens again in the future. He also appealed for awarding befitting punishment to the culprits as per the law.
