IMPHAL: One of the major lifeline of Manipur the National Highway -37, or the Imphal-Jiribam Road has been cut off after the weak Iron Bailey Bridge over Irang River at Taubam village under Noney district gave in on Sunday morning at around 7:25 am.

A 10-Tyre Tipper Truck bearing registration number NL07A8937 which was crossing the bridge at the exact time fell into the river along with its driver and handyman. The driver is believed to have been carried away by the heavy river current though the handyman was immediately rescued.

According to the eye witnesses, the unfortunate incident happened when the 10-Tyres Tipper Truck loaded with sand was crossing the weak bridge and it suddenly broke down under its own weight and was swept down to the middle of the Irang River along with the truck and its occupants.

The driver and handyman of the ill-fated vehicle have been identified as Khamba and Raja. As soon as the bridge collapsed villagers from nearby Taubam village and the CRPF personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the handyman. However the driver of the truck is still missing in the river. Search and rescue operation is being carried out by the local volunteers and the security forces.

According to source the ill fated truck belongs to a private company which is associated with the railways construction works and was transporting sand from Dimapur towards Jiribam.

Due to the inaccessibility of the bridge many vehicle carrying goods and passengers were stranded on the road on both sides of the river. After getting information of the bridge collapse the All Manipur Road Transport (AMRT) and Driver Motor Workers Union (DMWU) have blocked the road and the concerned department of the State is in the process of taking up repair on the bridge.
