Inmate dies in quarantine centre, COVID-19 status yet to be confirmed

IMPHAL: A 40-year old inmate of Nambol Higher Secondary School Community Quarantine Center (CQC) with history of multiple viral infections has died late Monday night. However, his status is yet to be confirmed and sample has been taken for Covid-19 test and the result is awaited.

The deceased reportedly hails from Nambol Kongkham and has been in Guwahati for the last about 7 years and returned home with his wife on July 13, 2020 by flight and died with multi organs failure because of his prolonged diseases.

In a press release issued by CMO Bishnupur Dr. L. Gojendra Singh on Tuesday as per Covid-19 SOP the person was kept at Nambol Higher Secondary School Community Quarantine Center (CQC)  and has also history of health issues and still under treatment for multi viral infection starting since late 2013 during his stay on their temporary resident at Guwahati.

The MO in-charge CHC Nambol L. Kuber Singh along with District Surveillance Officer, Bishnupur Dr. L. Raichandra Singh took care of the person till late night as his health condition was poor. But, unfortunately the person expired at around 11.18 pm on the same day. The sample that has been taken for Covid-19 test is still awaited, added the press release.

It was further stated that in the absence of sample report, the deceased’s body was wrapped and disinfected, and was taken by ambulance from CQC to the crematorium, working on the assumption of handling a Covid-19 positive body. Therefore, the crematorium will be disinfected afterwards, stated the press release.

The release added that Covid-19 is spread by droplets from cough and sneeze of an infected person. There is very little risk of spread from a death body. Thus, however small the risk of infection from the dead body all due care were taken to protect the family members and community because of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. If the sample of the departed or his wife or both are positive for Covid-19, all close contacts will be tested. In the meantime, they must be in Community Quarantine Center, stated the press release.
