Imphal: INC Candidate of 51-Saitu Assembly Constituency Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip, who is going to contest in the upcoming By-Election on November 7, has been accused of assaulting Kholep Village, Kangpokpi District Village Chief Khaithang Haokip and his family members on Monday evening.
Mercy Haokip (30), daughter of the Village Chief, informed of the assault to her father and her family members to media persons during a press conference held at her residence at Kholep Village on Tuesday.
Mercy said that on Monday evening, the INC Candidate of 51-Saitu Assembly Constituency Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip along with his security escort and workers entered the house of her father, the Village Chief of Kholep Village uninformed. Without giving any reason Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip started assaulting/beating and abusing the Village Chief Khaithang Haokip, Mercy herself and other family members, she said.
Mercy alleged that the assault to her family members is connected with the upcoming By-Election.
Mercy further said that after assaulting her family members, Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip along with his security escort and workers immediately left the house. However, as they left they destroyed and damaged a few properties, chairs of the house, she stated.
A video footage clip taken during the incident was made available to the media persons.
Meanwhile, the Election Committee, INC, 51-Saitu (ST) AC has clarified stating that an election-related meeting for the upcoming bye-election of 51-Saitu (ST) Assembly Constituency was held at Khoken Village, New Keithelmanbi. The meeting took place at the residence of Paotong Doungel, chief of Khoken village, who is also the chief Agent of Ngamthang Haokip. BJP candidate under 51-Saitu (ST) Assembly Constituency, the Committee stated in a press release.
The meeting was reportedly organised by three individuals namely Paolun, David and Thahpi. The individuals Paolun and David are top leaders of Kuki Revolution Army (KRA) while Thahpi is commander of Sinai camp of Kuki National Army (KNA). Interestingly, both the militant organisations were under SoO with central and state governments, the Election Committee of INC, 51-Saitu (ST) AC stated.
In the said meeting held today, the three individuals summoned all village chiefs of the area where the chiefs were being forced to take oath by letting them sign an agreement to support the BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip in 51-Saitu (ST) Assembly Constituency. A feast of oath was served under pressure to the chiefs present by killing a cattle, the Committee said.
It is also pertinent to note that the 38th Assam Rifles despite having knowledge of the incident did nothing but instead acted as a facilitator for the success of the meeting, the office of the Central Working Committee of 51-Saitu (ST) AC said.
It is very regretful that such incident of pressure and intimidation took place in the country of the largest democracy in the world that to0 right under the nose of security forces.
The meeting and the nature of how it takes place is condemned at the highest, the Committee said and urged the concerned government authority to take legal action against all the individuals and group responsible in the said illegal activity.
