IMPHAL: Congress Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has tongued-lashed the Congress MLAs who had resigned to join BJP, citing that such shameless and unscrupulous politicians have made mockery of democracy.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday observed 76th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the premises of Congress Bhawan, Imphal.

President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Moirangthem Okendro, former Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Congress MLAs, office bearers of the MPCC, Congress Councillors and workers attended the observance.

Speaking at the event, Okram Ibobi said that people elected the MLAs to rule the state for five years term based on the principles and ideology of their respective political parties. But the trend of the shameless, unethical legislators jumping from one party to another for power defying public mandate and party principles has derided the true spirit of democracy, he said.

If the legislators feel it utmost necessary to join the ruling party to serve the people better, they should first seek permission from the electors who elected them. They should boldly resign from MLA post and face fresh mandate, the former CM said.

Slamming the Congress MLAs who resigned and quit the party to join ruling BJP, Ibobi said that they have been shamelessly acting as Congress MLAs for the last three and half years but supporting the BJP Government wearing BJP cap and shawl.

They were running from pillar to post, acting as Congress MLA in daytime and BJP in night time for political mileage. We don’t know what personal benefit they must be getting by joining the ruling but people are well aware what they are doing for the state and their Assembly constituencies, Ibobi said.

Stating that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, during his short tenure, enacted the Anti-defection law to check frequent defection by legislators and to make democracy more meaningful, Ibobi, however, lamented that the unscrupulous MLAs do not care for 10th Shedule (Anti-defection law) of the Constitution.

Recalling the late Rajiv Gandhi’s efforts and achievements as a Prime Minister, Ibobi said that Rajiv was  far sighted and matured leader keen to develop the country.

Stating that he was a Prime Minister who wanted to maintain better neighborhood with other nations, Rajiv Gandhi sent Indian Peace keeping Force to Shri Lanka to prevent violent activities unleashed by LTTE. He was assassinated by using human bomb as revenge.

Congress leaders and workers paid floral tributes to the photo of the former Prime Minister.

Rajiv Gandhi, born on August 20, 1944, was the seventh Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He took office after the 1984 assassination of his mother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.  He was the youngest Prime Minister of India at 40.He was assassinated by a suicide bomber in 1991 at a public meeting in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur.
