Huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered

Imphal: Troops of 26 Assam Rifles and Manipur Police personnel of Machi Police Station have recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Karongthel area in Tengnoupal District on Wednesday.

According to police sources, acting on a multiple reliable information regarding some arms and ammunition kept concealed at Karongthel area, the joint team of the troops of Assam Rifles led by Commandant 26 Assam Rifles assisted by Manipur Police personnel of Machi Police Station under ASI Deepak Konthoujam immediately rushed at the said area and launched a search operation on Wednesday early morning around 5.

During the search operation, the joint team came across a package buried under a tree in a cavement made along a foothill of the Karongthel area at around 9:45 am.

Upon checking the package, it was found to contain one SLR (7.62 mm caliber), one SLR magazine with 10 x rounds (7.62 mm caliber), one 303 Bolt Action Rifle (7.62 mm caliber), one 303 Bolt Action Rifle Magazine, the source added.

The source also added that after recovery of the package containing arm and ammunition, further search was expanded and another package hidden in the similar manner along the foothills at an approximate distance of about 20 m from the first location was recovered at around 10:15 am of the same day.

Upon checking the second recovered package, it was found to contain three .32 mm Pistol, three .32 mm Pistol Magazine, one Magazine (COLT AR-15, caliber 5.56 mm, made in USA), one Magazine (COLT AR-15, caliber .223, made in USA), 843 rounds of 9 mm caliber Luger (made in USA), 2874 rounds of 5.56 mm caliber (M-16), 75 rounds of 70 mm caliber (12 bore), 16 rounds and 1 of fire case (9mm caliber), 17 rounds of 7.62 mm caliber, 70 rounds of .30 mm caliber, 13 rounds of 7.65 mm caliber and one R/S (Yaesu FM transceiver VX-8),

The recovered arms, ammunition and war like stores have been handed over to Tengnoupal Police Station for further investigations, the source added.
