HERICOUN raises concerns on treatment of COVID-19 patients

TMB Report

IMPHAL: The Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN) has drawn the attention of the administration to the fact that more and more people needing treatment for non-Covid-19 diseases are perplexed by the scarcity of health facilities to answer to their needs due to containment related closures, reminding of the death of a patient from Thoubal district while waiting for treatment to illustrate the drastic nature of the situation.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, HERICOUN stated that previously the patients of Covid-19 were those with a travel history to other states but of late there has been proof of cluster infection and the state is on the brink of community transmission.

The spreaders at the moment are from the frontline warriors including those pertaining to medical, paramedical, and security forces and the contagion reached government establishments, civilians without travel history and camps of security forces. Patients who had otherwise admitted to RIMS and Shija Hospitals for non-Covid-19 health issues have also contracted the disease. Many hospitals and clinics have been shut down temporarily for containment purposes, resulting in patients with regular sickness failing to find available health centres to undergo treatment. The death of an individual from Thoubal district from lack of much needed medical intervention is a revealing peek into the grievous condition, HERICOUN stated while sharing the grief over the loss of life. The organization noted that complaints of similar nature are growing day by day from all quarters. It demanded allocation of a separate hospital for treatment of non-Covid-19 patients while ringing the alarm bell that unless such specific action is not taken up as a priority many unfortunate circumstances are going to befall on such patients. HERICOUN sought that preferably either one of the two premier hospitals in the state, RIMS or JNIMS, be reserved for treatment of non-Covid-19 diseases and health issues.

HERICOUN also stressed on the virtues of public to act with wisdom instead of partaking with sensitivity to localized safeguarding only. It also pleaded with political parties to work together with each other showing cooperation in the time of such crisis and asked the administration and businessmen to check price hike and ensure availability of essential items continuously.
