BISHNUPUR: A one day discussion on the fate of Moirang Assembly constituency from delimitation exercise was held at Moirang Yumkhaibam Leikai on Saturday. Moirang MLA P. Sharatchandra councilors of Moirang Municipal Council, Kwakta Municipal Council and members of Kwakta Gram Panchayat, members of CSOs, clubs and resource persons participated at the discussion.
MLA P. Sharatchandra, chairperson of Moirang Municipal Council M. Romibala, and principal of Moirang College K. Anand, were the special attendees at the event.
Speakers at the function including the head of political science department of Moirang College, Y. Modhu Singh, lecturer M. Jugin, social workers H. Boyai, Md. Nasir Khan, M. Ashok, and ex-chairperson of Moirang Municipal Council H. Mohindro presented their views on the possible detrimental effects to the constituency as wells as its benefits.
The meeting took a position that delimitation exercise based on the 2001 census will be wrong and not agreeable and decided in favour of forming a consultative committee coopting political parties in Moirang Kendra, local leaders, leaders of CSOs and clubs, and representatives from the people. Until the formation of the committee, the MLA and his office have been entrusted with all the responsibilities on the matter.
P. Sharatchandra stated that the voice of the public, CSOs and local bodies must be made to be heard by the delimitation commission for ensuring correct execution of the delimitation process.
