IMPHAL: Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West-1 in charge of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West directed the designated officers, Food Safety Administration, Imphal to collect the samples from all the list of seized betel leaves and to examine/analyze for determining whether it is fit for human consumption.
The application was filed before the court by SDPO, Singjamei police station praying for directing the designated officers, Food Safety Administration, Imphal to collect the samples.
As yesterday, the court registered it Cril Misc case and heard the submission of APP of the state which mention that the seized huge quantity of betel leaves was transported to Imphal from Kolkata in Cargo flights on April 4 when there is restriction of transportation of non-essential commodities in Manipur as per order by Chief Secretary, government of Manipur on March 23 and as such further enquire if the consignee acquired due permission for the said consignee.
In that the required permission was not obtained by the consignee from the competent authority and as such the consignment was forbidden to carry out.
The said seized consignment is in the custody of Singjamei police station without proper storage facilities thereby deteriorating and hazardous and more over the said consignment import from Kolkata which is a seriously COVID-19 Pandemic affected city thereby creating a huge apprehension of public safety.
The court on hearing of the submission of APP of the state and considering the alarming situation due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the state of Manipur.
The court also observed that the seized betel leaves are required to be examined/analysis by the competent authority in the interest of the safety for all as the seized items are of perishable in nature and the prayer of IO was allowed, said sources.
