District Level Advocacy Program on Van Dhan Held

Chandel: A district level advocacy program on Van Dhan under the Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana organised by DFO Chandel Forest Division under the aegis of TRIFED, Ministry of tribal Affairs, Government of India was held on Thursday at Common Facility Centre cum Community Hall, Chamdil Christian Village in Chandel District.

Nodal Officer TRIFED Gaithaolu Thaimei, Deputy Commissioner Chandel Krishna Kumar and DFO Chandel Esther Laltankim Serto graced the function as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honours respectively.

Speaking on the function, Nodal Officer, TRIFED Gaithaolu Thaimei expressed to extent TRIFED as it stands for tribal cooperative marketing federation and said that TRIFED is also implemented by the forest department.

The Nodal Officer said that Van Dhan is a comprehensive program as it is a livelihood project which also includes Skill development and also project on women empowerment as 95% of its members and beneficiaries are women.

The project is also being implemented base on the non-forest products which are vastly available in our forest and is also giving much importance on processing, packaging, branding and also marketing, the Nodal Officer added.

The Nodal Officer also said that each Van Dhan Kendra (VDK) which will be consist of fifteen SGH groups of twenty members each will be given fifteen lakhs in the form of materials ,equipments, etc.

Deputy Commissioner, Chandel Krishna Kumar said that Van Dhan is an excellent program taken to improve the livelihood of the forest dwellers and the tribal people.

The Deputy Commissioner said, though the project is being implemented by the forest department but all the concern departments of the district are there to give full support for the successful implementation of the schemes.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that if the products which were wasted due to lack of processing and other facilities can be marketed under this project and added that it will be a boom to the economy of the district if these products can be sold to Imphal and outside the state.

DFO Chandel Esther Laltankim Serto gave a detail presentation about the Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana during the function.

DLOs of more than 300 members of different Self help Groups from all over the district also attended the Advocacy program.
