Disposal of seized betel leaves is prerogative of court: SP

TMB Report

IMPHAL: Taking serious note of the false rumors doing round about the huge consignment of betel leaf seized from Imphal International Airport being whisked away from police custody, Imphal West SP K Meghachanda has clarified that the said that items are still intact in police custody and that the department cannot dispose the items without following the due process of law.

Addressing media persons, the police officer said that the allegation from some sections including CADA about replacement of the betel leaves inside the sack with cabbage and other garbage materials has put the police department in the wrong light. A five member team of CADA along with SDPO and OC of Singjamei PS on Thursday inspected the packets of betel leaves kept in police custody. The said items were kept in Police custody after being duly signed by a competent officer of the food safety division. Spreading false information on the issue without verifying the facts is unacceptable. In such crucial times, CSOs, NGOs should also play a positive role without succumbing to false and immature information, said the SP.

The case of confiscation of betel leaves is going on under due process of law. Police is not authorized to dispose such items on their own judgment. It is the prerogative of the Court either to dispose it or not. Spreading false information, defaming police without knowing the facts will attract legal action, cautioned the SP.

Stating that several CSOs are helping the Police, Meghachandra also lauded such CSOs and appealed to play positive role in the present juncture.
