IMPHAL: The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has expressed happiness on the assurance made by education minister Sorokhaibam Rajen to propose the recognition of Meitei Mayek as the official script at the cabinet meeting and also to allow candidates to appear competitive examination by using the script.
DESAM, in a press release signed by its general secretary Leishangthem Lamyanba Meitei, said that it has submitted a final ultimatum to the state’s chief minister N Biren in the month of March for making an amendment in the Manipur Official Language Act 1979 section 2 (F) and affix Meitei Mayek as the official language script. Currently, as per the Act, ‘Manipur language means Meiteilon written in Bengali script and spoken by the majority of Manipur population,’ and the students’ organisation has demanded a replacement of Meitei/Meetei Mayek instead of the Bengali script during the last Assembly sitting.
Moreover, the then director of language planning and implementation L. Nandakumar who is now presently in the post of education director has already assured DESAM that the path is cleared for its passage and cabinet memo has been prepared ahead of passing it in the assembly meeting.
Mentions may be made here that Meitei Mayek was introduced in schools as the script for Manipuri subject in the year 2006 and debuted in the HSLC examination in 2015. Some of the students are pursuing their Master degrees in Manipuri language in the script after completing their graduations similarly. However, the Meitei Mayek students have not been permitted to crack civil examinations like MPSC and UPSC as the government is yet to amend the act, he added.
Thanking the education minister for his seriousness in pursuing the matter, DESAM forwarded its desire that the amendment of the Official Language Act be taken up as soon as the next Cabinet meeting.
