Defense Minister to be urged to take all Sainik Schools: Radheshyam

IMPHAL: Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam said that he will urge the Union Defense ministry to take all Sainik Schools to bring uniformity throughout the country. For this, he will personally meet Union defense minister, apart from writing to him in this regard.

The minister told this to reporters on the sideline of providing financial Assistance to the 14 selected NDA cadets who are undergoing training in Pune.

He said that during the 22nd Board of Governors’ meeting of Sainik School with Minister of state for Defense in the chair, he urged the defense ministry to take all the Sainik schools.

Stating that 1225 Kendriya Vidyalayas and 598 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are functioning across the country under HRD ministry with an annual budget sanction of over 8000 Cr, he, in the meeting, questioned why the Defense ministry, having the highest budget, should not take the Sainik schools, which is only 30 in number. He also highlighted the grievances of the poor students studying in Sainik schools. Most of the ministers and officers who attended the meeting also endorsed his proposal to the ministry, he said.

Regarding this issue, I will meet the Defense minister and also write to him. All Education ministers of the North east will also be met to discuss on the issue, he added.

Regarding the financial Assistance to the 14 selected NDA cadets, he said that youths of the state have been contributing their part to defense of the country right from the Azad Hind Phouz to Indo-Pak war 1971. Even in Kargil, Manipuri soldiers sacrificed their lives. He decided to provide Rs.50,000 each to the 14 NDA cadets who are undergoing training in Pune in view of the financial problems they are facing. NDA cadets are not entitled to salary during their training. They will get salary once they get commissioned after competition of three years training.

He said that state government is considering to provide financial assistance of one lakh each to the selected NDA cadets from the state.
