IMPHAL: Corporator of Imphal Municipal Corporation ward No 18 Laimayum Inunganbi Devi has doled out assistance to school van drivers who are reeling under the brunt of COVID-19 pandemic and belonging to her ward on Monday.
Accompanied by ward members Monorama RK and N. Imochabi Singh, the corporator went to each of the residences of the aggrieved school van drivers and made a donation of Rs 1000 each along with other essential food items such as rice, tea leaf and sugar.
Inunganbi while sharing the pain and troubles that the drivers are facing during these hard-pressed pandemic days said that the COVID-19 pandemic has utterly victimised the school van drivers. They are facing a hard life with no source of income and job to survive though they have maintained their families with the income from transporting students. After closure of schools for almost nine months due to COVID-19 pandemic, they have been left jobless, Inunganbi said.
Stressing that the van drivers who are transporting school children also have vital roles in nation building and their roles should not be undermined, Inunganbi urged the government to initiate some welfare activities for the van drivers, being aggrieved by the pandemic.
Talking into consideration the grievances faced by the drivers and their families, she had decided to extend her best support to them, Inunganbi said.
She also appealed to other people who have similar desire to assist to come forward to help the drivers in such crucial times.
