IMPHAL: State Government has taken up exhaustive precautionary measures to with the aim of preventing the spread of Coronavirus in the state. Medical teams have been deployed at Imphal International Airport, and border gates at Moreh, Behiang, Mao and Jiribam to screen the people entering the state using infrared thermometer to detect possible carriers of the virus.
The state government was prompted to take up such precautionary measures due to the alarming outbreak of Coronavirus which originated from Wuhan City in China, said Dr L Arke, Additional Director (Public Health), medical department, Manipur.
He said that Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses with positive sense single stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome which causes common cold, runny nose, headache, fever, sore throat, and general feeling of being unwell. It causes disease in mammals and birds. The spectrum of the diseases can range from common cold to severe life threatening pneumonia. The virus may cause diarrhea in cows and pigs while in chickens it can cause an upper respiratory disease. Except for symptomatic treatment, there are no vaccines or antiviral drugs that are approved for prevention or treatment of the virus, he said.
He stated that initially Coronavirus was not transmitted from man to man. WHO has sounded a global high alert after the virus was found to have transmitted been from man to man in China’s Wuhan City recently. On December 27 last year, the novel virus was first detected in Wuhan City with some men confirmed positive. Chinese doctors first provided normal treatment to those Coronavirus infected patients with symptoms of runny nose, headache, fever, sore throat but they were prompted to do further research in the disease after some patients died due to respiratory problems and hypoxia. Chinese authority formally intimated WHO about the disease. The virus has spread to some other countries. However, the cases found in Japan and some other countries mainly originated from China’s Wuhan City, he added.
The world has become a small village due to fast air connectivity. There are many Manipuris in China and as such, the state government has been compelled to take up precautionary measures as there is high chance that some of those Manipuris in China may return home infected the virus. As the Centre had on January 18 directed the state health departments to take up precautionary measures, a medical team led by an MO has been deployed at Imphal airport to screen the people entering the state to find out if any of them are suffering from fever. The team will be submitting a report to the government on a daily basis.
To monitor travelers moving in on the land route, medical teams led by concerned MOs have also been deployed at four entry points along the border namely Moreh, Behiang, Jiribam and Mao. Details of the passengers will also be recorded.
Taking serious note of the media reports regarding detection of some patients who have found to be Coronavirus positive in neighbouring Nepal and Sri Lanka, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI yesterday conducted a live video conferencing with the medical department officials, chief secretaries and DGPs of the concerned states and discussed the strategies to combat the spread of the virus in the country. The ministry also sought details of the prevailing situations including the problems that the states are facing in combating the outbreak of the virus, he added.
If any person coming from China is detected with fever, details of the person will be recorded, fever surveillance will be conducted and report will be sent to centre on daily basis. He will be referred to RIMS or JNIMS isolation ward if the symptoms are reckon to be severe.
He said that people need not panic about the disease explaining that if we take up precautionary measures like washing hands with soaps properly and avoid direct contact with the infected persons by using mask then the virus can be avoided.
The precautionary measures will be continued until the world is declared Coronavirus free, he announced.
