‘Disqualify the candidature of Ngamthang Haokip, BJP candidate’
Imphal: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and Dr Lamtinthang Haokip, Indian National Congress (INC) candidate for 51-Saitu (ST) have written to the Election Commission of India (ECI), New Delhi following an alleged threat from militant groups in the state and sought necessary action for the same.
In a letter to the ECI on Thursday with subject “Compliant against the SoO group KNO/KRA for life attempt of INC candidate in a public meeting”, Dr Lamtinthang Haokip, the INC candidate for 51-Saitu (ST) stated that the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), which is under Suspension of Operation (So0) with the Union and State Governments, attempted his life by firing six rounds of bullets while he was campaigning at Kangchup Tuikun village under Kangchup police station in Kangpokpi district, Manipur for the bye-election in 51-Saitu (ST) A/c on October 28, 2020.
“The said KRA had also physically assaulted the INC sub-committee chairman Khailun Vaiphei of Kharam Vaiphei village and threatened six other INC supporters on the same night,” Dr Lamtinthang Haokip wrote in the letter adding that the “KRA also stopped INC supporters of Leimakhong Areas from organizing public rally”.
KRA cadres are freely roaming in Saitu Assembly constituency with arms and campaigning for BJP candidate, the INC candidate stated in the letter.
“In the light of the stated facts above, I, therefore, request you to kindly disqualify the candidature of Ngamthang Haokip, BJP candidate and take appropriate actions against KRA for justice and to uphold democratic election,” Dr Lamtinthang Haokip said.
President of MPCC M. Okendro also submitted a letter to the Election Commission of India, New Delhi stating that the Congress campaign rally for the Saitu A/C bye-elections at Kangchup Chingkhong polling station on October 28, 2020 came under threat for cancellation on the evening of October 27, 2020.
“The threat came specifically from the U.G under SoO talks with the Govt. of India, viz the KRA (The Kuki Revolutionary Army) operating in the area. They are overtly in support of the BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip,” the MPCC President stated in the letter.
With due deference to their objection, the meeting/rally was shifted to the open S.D.O. ground of Kangchup village. In spite of the shifting of venue there was firing of automatic weapons from the nearby hill towards the meeting. The motive is to create fear and scare among the INC candidate’s (Lamtinthang Haokip) supporters and voters, Okendro stated in the letter.
“It is also a direct attempt on the life of the INC candidate, VIPs on the dias, as well as the Congress workers and supporters. The firing took place at about 1.00 PM during the delivery of speeches by Congress VIPs at the rally on 28. 10. 2020,” the MPCC President further stated.
Stating that the E.C.I. is hereby informed of the above incident and to note it as a serious matter, the MPCC has called for necessary action against the identified U.G who are under SoO protocol signed with the GOl, and to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
