Cong belittles Govt’s claims on liquor legalisation

TMB Report
Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has termed the statement of the State Government that legalisation of liquor is to provide hygienic liquor to the people as an eye wash to the people.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan here on Thursday, MPCC Vice-President Hareshwar Goshwami while recounting as to how Meira Paibi and Nishabandi movement started in the State, said that the statement of the government defending legalisation of liquor is to befool the people.
While rebutting the ‘contradictory’ claims made by the government that the September 20 Cabinet decision to legalise liquor is to provide hygienic and safe liquor and that legalisation of liquor does not focus on earning revenue, the Congress spokesman said that the government’s move will prove to be disastrous and termed it as an eyewash to hoodwink the people.

In fact, the saffron government which is currently facing bankruptcy is looking for means and ways as to how to earn revenue. Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) had earlier declared that liquor is a poisonous food. Legalisation of liquor can be construed as a strategy to kill the people by way of slow poisoning, Hareshwar said.

If the government has a political will, liquor can be prevented
properly. Liquor prevention fails as the government intentionally
gives a free hand, the Congress leader said, adding that legalisation of liquor is to suck the blood of the poor and benefit the rich.

The government should continue prohibition on liquor as per the wishes of the people, he added.
