IMPHAL: Rajya Sabha MP and titular Manipuri King Leishemba Sanajaoba has said that Centre has given nod to the proposal for enlisting Manipuri language in the classical language category under certain criteria.
The MP stated this while speaking during a felicitation function held at JN Manipur Dance Akademy on Saturday. The Akademi felicitated Lok Sabha MP Dr RK Ranjan, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba and Sh Premananda Sharma who was recently appointed as OSD Govt of Manipur to New Delhi (Minister of state rank).
Speaking to the gathering, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba recounted that soon after he was elected MP, he raised in the Parliament the issue of enlisting Manipur language among classical languages of the country. Centre had granted approval to enlist Manipuri language under four specific criteria. The Centre has sought recommendation from the state government after fulfilling the criteria. Necessary committee has been constituted for this. A report will be submitted to the centre soon, Leishemba said.
Enlisting the endangered Manipuri language in the classical languages list will protect the language for generations to come. It will benefit the students who are pursuing higher studies in Manipuri language, he said.
Leishemba Sanajaoba continued that India is a land where different communities speaking different languages are settled. Only six languages in the country are enlisted in the classical languages list till date. Manipuri language will be the seventh language to be enlisted in Classical languages, he said adding that he decided to contest the MP election to raise the issues of the state in the right platform.
Terming the ongoing controversy in Manipur University of culture as unfortunate, he said that the state is globally acknowledged for its unique culture and art forms and occurrence of culture related controversies is unacceptable.
He assured that he will take a proactive role to settle the issue soon.
