Imphal: Committee of Civil Society Kangleipak (CCSK) will observe the Manipur National Day to commemorate the first Assembly sitting of an “Independent” Manipur on October 18, 1948. The event will be held on October 18 at Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound.
Speaking to media persons at the office of CCSK, Checkon, CCSK president Jeetendra Ningomba said that the event is held every year by CCSK to commemorate the day when the first government of Manipur was formed and held an Assembly session. He appealed to the people from both the hills and valley to participate in the function.
Recalling that after the British departure, Manipur became an independent state, Jeetendra said that the Manipur State Constitution Act, 1947 was passed and adopted the universal adult franchise.
On October 18, 1948 the people of Manipur cast their vote to choose their leader and the elected persons took oath in Manipur State Darbar, Jeetendra said. He said that the then elected leaders of the hills and valley took oaths to lead the people and protect the land. He said that the present generation needs to remember the day.
