She basically stressed on prevention, preparation and response aspects.
The experts explained that earthquakes can happen anytime and anywhere and it is how we prepare ourselves and respond to it which is important. For earthquakes, the best way to respond is to Drop, Cover and Hold-on. One should not run while the earthquake is still shaking to prevent serious injury but to cover oneself under the table or with books. The idea is to prevent injury to the head.
For fire accidents, one should follow the mantra – Stop, Drop and Run/Roll as the case may be. Above all it is important to have fire-alarm system and fire extinguishers in ready always. Drowning can be prevented by not swimming under the influence of alcohol or drugs. One should not venture into unchartered waters. She also said that there is an urgent need to have well trained professional divers to rescue victims whenever it occurs.
