Imphal: Minister of Water Resources Department and Relief & Disaster Management Awangbow Newmai released first installment of “Awangbow Newmai special scheme for widower, orphan and disabled” over Rs. 4.50 lakh to 300 beneficiaries including widows, widowers, orphans and differently abled persons across Tamei Assembly Constituency as a financial aid.
Minister Awangbow handed over the amount to beneficiaries with prayers from United Baptist Church (UBC), Tamenglong Pastor Ch. Widabou at Shekinuh Inn, Tamenglong headquarters on Saturday.
Under the special scheme, a financial benefit of Rs. 500 per month is provided to the eligible widows, widowers, orphans and disabilities persons and it is payable every three months. The money will be transferred directly to the bank account of the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the gathering, Minister Awangbow said that the government has been implementing various schemes for weaker sections but the schemes have not been able to fully cover all the eligible people. He disclosed that he is bearing 65 percent of the scheme amount from his monthly package and donations from fellow supporters and well-wishers.
He conveyed that the scheme will exist till the current term of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly is over.
Awangbow acknowledged that Tamei is one of the least developed ACs in the State and considering the geographical location, lack of modern facilities and low economy, Tamei and Tousem sub-divisions have become one of the most backward sub-divisions in terms of development.
He stressed that in the absence of proper healthcare facilities and lack of awareness, mortality rate is high in the constituency. As a result, there are numerous widows, widowers, orphans and differently abled persons. He added that the scheme will be expanded since the deserving people are still left out this time.
He mentioned that a committee was formed to shortlist the beneficiaries from the recommendations submitted by village chairmen.
During the programme, Hembuiliu from Namtiram village expressed her gratitude to the Minister for making the scheme available to the needy villagers. She added that she will continue praying and support the Minister in the days to come.
The programme was attended by former ADC Chairman of Tamenglong Namsinrei Panmei, ex-ADC members and officials of the NPF party.
