ATM staff shot dead in broad daylight robbery, Rs 1.15 cr looted; locals hold torch rally, storm Ccpur PS

IMPHAL: In a daring daylight robbery in Churachandpur, unidentified armed men shot dead one of the security staffs of Writer Safeguard Company, a partner of SBI, who were undergoing the day’s business of refilling cash in ATM booths, and made off with huge cash of Rs.1.15 crore on Friday.

The incident took place in broad daylight on Friday at around 11.30 AM in front of a SBI Bank ATM along Tiddim road in Churachandpur town.

An ATM staff identified as Arambam Ranjan (36), S/o (L) Arambam Kumar of Keirao Langdum, Imphal East, presently staying at Zou Veng Lamka, Churachandpur succumbed to bullet injuries in the incident.

The victim Ranjan along with three other fellow staffs withdrew Rs. 1.15 cr from SBI Churachandpur town to refill cash in SBI ATM booths in and around Churachandpur town. After collecting the cash from the bank, Ranjan along with his staffs refilled cash in SBI main branch ATM.  Ranjan was sitting inside their Bolero jeep bearing registration no. NL07C-9242 alone with the huge cash while his three other colleagues had entered the ATM booth there. In the meantime, some unidentified gunmen, who reportedly came on a bike, shot on his belly and chest. It is suspected that the gunmen might have uses a silencer device as people around there did not hear the sound of gun shots, sources said.

Injured Ranjan was first brought to District Hospital Churachandpur for immediate medical treatment. With his condition getting deteriorated, he was referred to Imphal but reportedly succumbed to bullet injury en route to Shija Hospital.

Ranjan is survived by his wife and a seven year old son. He was staying at his relative’s house at Khuga Tampak along with his family.

In connection with the incident, a case has been registered at Churachandpur Police Station. The three other staffs, who accompanied Ranjan, have been picked up for interrogation.
