According to the victim, he headed for Imphal from Moreh without passengers on Tuesday at around 7 PM. Upon reaching Zero as known by people of Tengnoupal at Chamol village, armed miscreants asked him to pay Rs 250 as tax. After he told them that he could not pay the lesser amount also, the armed miscreants beat him black and blue.

Meanwhile, taking strong exception to the incident, enraged drivers have threatened to block Imphal-Moreh road indefinitely in case the culprits are not arrested and punished within 24 hours.

Strongly condemning the severe assault, drivers employed in passenger service along Imphal-Moreh road staged a sit-in-protest at Sora Bazaar.

The protesters formed ‘Joint Action Committee Against Brutal Torture of Md. Abdul Hakim’ in connection with the incident. The JAC resolved to block Imphal-Moreh road indefinitely if the culprits are not arrested and punished by 6 AM of October 7.

Talking to media persons, one of the drivers said that the place where Md Abdul Hakim was beaten is close to a police post. He drew the attention of the authority concerned to intervene into the matter of collecting tax by armed miscreants in areas where there is presence of police personnel.
