IMPHAL: The Chandel Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) on Saturday recovered huge quantity of illegal imported cigarettes worth lakhs.
After receiving specific input pertaining to move of contraband item across India-Myanmar border from Ghampazol village towards Sugnu, troops of Assam Rifles launched an operation, IGAR(S) said in a press release.
The troops spotted two Gypsies and intercepted them. After carrying out thorough search of the vehicle, 34490 packets of illegal Imported Chinese WIN Cigarettes were recovered worth Rs 43 lakh, the IGAR(S) said.
Recovered items along with apprehended indvidual were handed over to Custom Office Pallel for further legal action.
