IMPHAL: Units under command of HQ IGAR (South) organized Tree Plantation Drive on 27th, 28th and 30th Apr 2020 at various part of the state.

IGAR(S) informed that the Thoubal Battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles in conjunction with Forest Department organised a Tree Plantation Drive on 27th Apr. The drive was organised as part of the ‘Green India Initiative’ with an aim to conserve the environment to face the challenges of global warming. The drive commenced with an informative lecture on ‘Deforestation and Global Warming’ followed by tree plantation. All the Company Operating bases of the battalion carried out plantation at respective locations and a total of 2,000 saplings of multiple varieties mostly fruit bearing and long life Span trees so as to have dual purpose of Environment Protection and Soil Conservation were planted.

Likewise, Tamenglong Battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles also carried out a massive ‘Tree Plantation Drive’ at village Azuiram in the Area of Responsibility of Company Operating Base Azuiram on 28th Apr 2020, the IGAR(S) said. Around 500 saplings of different varieties including fruit trees were planted and nurtured during the drive by Assam Rifles troops. 

 Subsequently, Joupi, Sehlon and Sajik Tampak Battalions of 28 Sector Assam Rifles carried out a tree plantation drive at Joupi, New Samtal, Aigejang & Chamol villages of Chandel District on 28th Apr. A total of 1,150 saplings of locally available flora which includes Teak, Pine, Sagwan, Mulberry, Vajrad, Gooseberry and Guava were planted during the drive .The villagers were also briefed about the significance of forests in daily livelihood and their adverse implications due to the ongoing changes in weather conditions.

During the Tree Plantation Drive, all precautionary measures against threat of COVID-19 including social distancing, wearing of masks was also taken. The endeavour of the Assam Rifles is to contribute as much as possible in the ‘Go Green’ initiative of Government of India. Assam Rifles will continue to organise such activities to contribute in maintaining ecological balance and conserve the environment for future generations as well.
