Imphal:Defying Police restrictions, the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall, Imphal West, demanding implementation of Manipur Private Schools (Registration & Regulation) Act, 2017 and implementation of strict regulation for Hostels & Boardings in Manipur, on Wednesday.
Speaking to media persons on the sideline of the protest, HRD Secretary, AMSU Bruce Pebam said that the union resolved to demand implementation of Manipur Private Schools (Registration & Regulation) Act, 2017 after considering the nature of the private schools, hostels and boarding in the state which are collecting large amount of money unreasonably in the name education and the un-surety of jobs of schools teachers.
He recalled the un-natural death of 14 year old girl student N. Babysana of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur inside the boarding dormitory and said that apart from the death of Babysana, there have been other various cases of negligence on part of schools boarding authority which led to the death of students in the past.
Such incident occurred due to non-follow of the rules and regulations by the private schools in the state and doubt such incident will continue to happen in the future, he added.
Bruce Pebam appeals the state government to implement the Manipur Private Schools (Registration & Regulation) Act, 2017 and strict regulation for Hostels & Boarding’s in Manipur to develop the education sector in much better and safer way.
If the government fails to fulfil their demands into work, AMSU is prepared to continue to stage intense agitations in democratic manner, Bruce warned.
Later, the protesting AMSU members took out a protest rally in democratic way from the community hall towards the Keisampat bridge, however, Police personnel who were on alert foiled the rally.
However, the protesting AMSU members took u-turn and marched the rally till Kwakeithel.
The protesting AMSU members also held various placards during the protest.
