Imphal: The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has shut down six schools namely MECI Explorer Academy, Changangei; Paree Imom Sindamshang, Langjing; Tiny Tots School, Dewlahland; Bright Foundation School, Thoubal Khetri Leikai Tomjing; St. Xaviers School, Moirang; and MEM School, Ghari on a temporary basis for collecting school fees and for operating in defiance against the will of the people.
In a press release of AMSU signed by its Public & information Secretary Lhunpao Lupheng, it was stated that the people in every nook and corner in the state have been suffering due to Covid-19 pandemic. And to tackle the dreaded disease, the Government has been imposing lockdown across the country from time to time which is yet to finish.
As the present government has imposed a strong total lockdown since the month of March 25, 2020 to July month so as to protect and save live from the dreaded disease which has been restricted even stepping out from the house. For this reason, every work and earnings has been stopped so the majority of the population in the state has been suffering. Still the state is yet to find relief from the dreaded virus.
Amidst this worst situation, the AMSU, CSOs in the state and other different organizations have been appealing to schools not to collect any fees from the students. In connection with the issue, the present government has served a notification in June month not to collect school fees from the students and to pay the monthly salary of the teachers according to the strength of the respective schools, said the release.
But the unfortunate thing is that in the month of September, the education department of the Manipur government issued an order permitting the collection of school fees fixed at 30 percent from the private schools in order to pay the monthly salaries of the teachers. AMSU as well as the entire people of Manipur has been appealing for the revocation of the order. A joint meeting of private schools and teachers from private schools was held in two phases, which resolved different resolutions, added the release.
Amidst the appeal of to revoke the new order of the education (S) department and disallowing collection of school fees from the students’, the AMSU received different complaints about the collection of school fees and leveling of pressure to the parents/guardians to clear the monthly school fees. In connection with the issue, AMSU carried out a wide probe to discover which schools have been collecting fees from the students. The schools turned out to be MECI Explorer Acadeny Changangei, Paree Imom Sindamshang Langjing, Tiny Tot’s School, Dewlahland, Bright Foundation School Thoubal Khetri Leikai Tomjing, St. Xaviers School Moirang, MEM School Ghari. The schools have been shut down for a temporary period, added the statement resultantly.
The students’ body informed that it will continue such surveys in the coming days. Regarding the matter, the students’ body appealed to the state government to issue an immediate order, and appealed to the private schools to stop the process of collecting monthly school fees from the students immediately.
