Agreement on NSU site sparks widespread protests in Imphal West; irate locals storm MLA Dingo’s house, SP Meghachandra injured

IMPHAL: The Memorandum of understanding arrived during the meeting of the Manipur Government representatives, KSO Sadar Hills and Kuki Inpi Manipur regarding the land dispute of National Sports University has sparked widespread violent protests in various parts of Imphal west district on Thursday.

Notably, KSO Sadar Hills and Kuki Inpi Manipur agreed to lift the total National Highway blockade following an agreement with the state Government on Wednesday.

The agreement, though it resolved the issue of one party, has hurt the sentiment of another party. People have strongly reacted to one particular clause of the agreement that reads, “After a thorough discussion it was agreed that the National Sports University shall be named as National Sports University, Haraothel. Since the land was donated by the Chief of Haraothel Village, Kangpokpi District Manipur, it was agreed to recommend the renaming of the NSU to the Ministry”.

People from Lamshang Assembly Constituency and Sekmai Assembly constituency on Thursday came out in large number and blocked roads to register their protest against the agreement.

Denouncing the decision of the Government, irate locals of Sekmai AC and Lamshang AC came out in the morning and blocked inter village roads at Leimakhong, Kanto Sabal, Khurkhul Lakhai, Khurkhul-Lamshang road, Sekmai, Kangchup and Keithelmanbi. 

In the morning around 9 AM, irate locals of Senjam Chirang, Koutruk, Phayeng, Sekmai, Kanto, Khurkhul, Moibung Khunou, Loitang, Phumlou and Maklang stormed Sekmai MLA H. Dingo’s residence at Khurkhul. House guard of the MLA closed the gate. Latter, some representatives were allowed to enter the house to hold talk with the local MLA.

MLA H Dingo came out from his house and held talks with the people gathered at his gate.

To pacify the crowd, the MLA assured that no inch of land in Imphal west will not be given to Kangpokpi district and that he would resign from MLA post to join the public protest if he fails to keep his words.

Latter, some representatives of the protestors were taken to the quarter of Education Minister S Rajen to hold talks.

To control the public mob, strong police teams led by IG zone-1 K.Jayenta, DIG Themthing, Imphal west SP K. Meghachandra rushed to the spot.

 In the morning around 9 AM, a group of protestors removed a display signboard imprinted with “Kangpokpi District”, erected at Leimakhong Chingmang, which the protestors claimed the area falls within revenue district of Imphal West.

Sources said that at around 3.30 PM in the evening, some unknown armed persons attacked by firing several rounds of gunshots from the hilltop when a group of protestors went to pull down display signboard imprinted ‘Kangpokpi district’ at Haraothel area.

Getting information, Police teams tried to rush to the spot. The unknown armed persons also fired towards the police. In retaliation, Police also fired several rounds of shots.

When the police retreated from there, a heated scuffle took place between the police and protestors. Police resorted to firing tear gas shells, mock bombs when Protestors started pelting stones towards the police.

In the fracas, SP Imphal West K.Meghachandra sustained injury on his left ear when hit by a stone pelted by the protestors. The injured police officer was immediately evacuated to Raj Medicity for medical treatment. One protestor sustained serious injury after being brutally beaten up by Police, added the source.

At Chirang area, a group of woman protestors blocked the vehicle of Police till late evening.

One protestor said that they have no objection to settlement of any community at Haraothel area but they should not claim it Kangpokpi district.
