Action demanded against Cop Officer over Physical assault of Civilian

TMB Report

Imphal: The family of a 45-year old man from Gwaltabi Maning Leikai has demanded that the State Government take strong action against Assistant Sub Inspector Malemnganba posted at Yaingangpokpi Police Station, for torturing and keeping him in illegal confinement.

Addressing reporters at Manipur Press Club on Saturday, Kh. Binarani, the wife of the victim Khundrakpam Ibungobi, charged that the police officer severely assaulted him after his arrest in connection with a familial dispute. She alleged that the police officer was one sided while dealing with the case.

She recounted that her husband was picked up from his house by a team of Yaingangpokpi Police Station led by ASI Malemnganba on December 3 at around 7 PM in connection with a family clash. After the arrest, family members immediately went to the police station to meet Ibungobi. However, Ibungobi was not found there. The police personnel there informed them that Ibungobi had been evacuated from there for COVID-19 testing.

Next morning, the family members went to the police station again. That time they were able to find him there but he was marked with injuries. When queried, he (Ibungobi) informed that he had been physically assaulted black and blue by ASI Malemnganba somewhere in Yaingangpokpi instead of detaining him inside the lock up of the police station, she added.

Atrocity to a civilian by the police without verifying the facts of the case is quite unacceptable, Binarani said and demanded the authority to punish the irresponsible police officer.
