5 PLA cadres involved in IED blasts arrested

Imphal: Altogether five cadres of the People Liberation Army (PLA), armed wing of the banned Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) have been arrested by a combined team of Thoubal District Commando and 16 Assam Rifles during a cordon and search operation conducted at Tentha Tuwaband Leikai on Monday.

Police sources said on receiving a reliable input from 16 AR that under the instruction of one SS Lt. Colonel Rishikanta alias Ranbir of the proscribed PLA, some cadres of the outfit had planned to disrupt the recent Independence Day celebrations by planting explosive devices and target non-local people in different valley districts for which arms and explosives had been transported from Moreh to one person at Tentha area, teams of Thoubal Commando led by Addl. SP (Ops) O Wangkhomba assisted by Inspector N. Sadananda and personnel of 16 Assam Rifles under the overall supervision of SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam conducted a cordon and search operation at Tentha Tuwaband Leikai at around 8.15 AM leading to the arrest of five of its cadres along with the seizure of four hand grenades.

The arrested cadres have been identified as Keidongbam Subol alias Khomei (43), son of (L) Keidongbam Biradhon of Wangbal Mayai Leikai; Paonam Manikanta Singh alias Amuyaima (32), son of P. Arun Singh of Jirighat Lakhinagar presently staying at Tentha Tuwaband Leikai and Thambalmani (46), wife of Md. Tomba of Yairipok Singa Ethei Mapal.

As a follow up operation, two more cadres of the PLA were arrested based on the input of Field G Team BSF Koirengei, conveyed a source.

The two have been identified as Sougaijam Ronan (32), son of Sougaijam Sanayaima of Kakching Wairi Kamala Pareng and Naorem Britain (27), son of Naorem Rajendro of Kakching Khunyai Leikai.

Upon enquiry, it was revealed that under the instruction of the SS Lt Colonel Rishikanta alias Ranbir of the PLA, they have been targeting non-local people in all the valley districts and that they along with other cadres arrested by the same combined team on August 13 were involved in the IED blast at Durga Mandir, Telepati in Imphal East on May 13 and the IED Blast at Khongjom Sapam, Thoubal on May 30, it said.

Later, the arrested persons and the seized items were handed over to Khongjom Police Station and after observing due formalities, a case has been registered for further investigation, the source added.
