THOUBAL: In a major haul by Kakching district police, a team led by officer in charge of Pallel police station, H Matumba confiscated 45,500 packets of Chinese made Win cigarettes, which could fetch approximately Rs 45 lakh under the existing market value, at Pallel at around 3:00 AM on Saturday.
The person smuggling the banned item from Moreh in a pickup truck has also arrested by the police.
According to a release from the Superintendent of Police of Kakching district Victoria Yengkhom, a police team led by OC Pallel PS intercepted a Tata Xenon bearing registration number MN01G-3709 (white in colour).The police team, without delay, checked the vehicle and found 91 cartoon boxes containing 500 foreign made cigarettes boxes (Win) i.e. 45,500 packets.
The driver of the vehicle was immediately arrested and he identified himself as Jingish Khan, 32 years, son of Md.Manor Ali of Hayel Labuk, under Thoubal Police Station, the press release stated.
The release also added that on preliminary enquiry, the driver disclosed that the items belonged to Hmangte Khup Kom, 46, son of Hmangte Ayang Kom of Checkon.
The arrested driver along with the seized cigarettes were later handed over to the Custom Office, Pallel for further necessary legal action, and also necessary action was initiated against the driver for breaking lockdown guidelines, the released mentioned.
It may be recalled here that 880 boxes of Win Kingsize cigarettes were also seized jointly by Thoubal District commando team and Heirok police station team from a couple at Heirok part (iii) Inganglok area on Thursday.
In another development, a person identified as Siansuanlian Zou alias Lianpu, son of Lianchinkhan Zou of Sugnu Zou Veng was arrested on charge of possessing 37.2 grams of heroin number 4 at Sugnu Napat Thongkhong on Saturday morning at around 7 am by a commando team of Kakching District, the release added.
