Imphal: In swift action taken up by Manipur Police, two suspects in demolishing a concrete bridge leading to Mt. Koubru and another two involved in the burning down of Chowkidar Quarters of the Sanamahi Laishang located at Jangmol village near Koubru Leikha in Kangpokpi district have been arrested.
Addressing media persons at the conference hall of SP Imphal West here on Monday, DIG Range–III Kamei Angam Romanus identified the two
suspects arrested in connection with the knocking down of the concrete bridge as Tonggoulen Kipgen (24), son of Thangjang Kipgen of Saijang village and Paokai Boulsom (29), son of (L) Thangpu
Boulsom of Ichaigojang village, both from Kangpokpi district.
He narrated that police received a report on April 14 at about 8:30 PM that A Songpijang–Manhjol concrete bridge leading to Mt. Koubru under the jurisdiction of Gamnom Sapormeina Police Station, Kangpokpi district had been damaged by unknown miscreants on the intervening night of April 13 and April 14.
He informed that in this regard, a suo-moto case under FIR No. 9(4)2021 G.SPM PS u/s 431/186/34 IPC & 3 of PDPP Act was registered for investigation.
During the course of investigation, the two suspects were picked up on the intervening night of April 16 and April 17. They were produced before the court of JMIC-Kangpokpi and remanded to four days police custody with effect from April 17 to April 20. Investigation of the case is in progress and those involved in the case will be arrested soon, he said.
The DIG said that police have made a road diversion and the department concerned has also repaired the concrete bridge for pilgrims, through which light vehicles can pass on, though black topping is yet to be done.
Although a police base camp had been set up at A Songpijang, police were not able to reach the spot during the time of the incident as the bridge is located at an isolated place, he added.
The two suspects arrested in connection with the burning down of Chowkidar Quarters of the Sanamahi Laishang were identified as Seiminlen Kipgen (32) and Seitinsat Kipgen (31), sons of (L) Otkhothang Kipgen of Jangmol village, Kangpokpi district.
The DIG also said that on April 15 at about 8:40 PM, police received a report that the chowkidar quarter of the Sanamahi Laishang located at Jangmol village near Koubru Laikha under Kangpokpi Police Station jurisdiction of Kangpokpi district had been partially burnt down by some unknown miscreants on April 14, 2021 at about 8:30 PM thereby causing damage to properties worth approximately Rs. 1300. Hence a suo moto case under FIR No. 17(4)2021 KPI-PS u/s 435/34 IPC was registered, he added.
The two suspects were arrested and produced before the court of JMIC-Kangpokpi and remanded to police custody for four days with effect from April 17. Investigation of the case in progress, he conveyed.
It was learnt that the incident at Chowkidar Quarters took place due to land dispute among the two brothers. The incidences of knocking down the concrete bridge and burning down of Chowkidar Quarters are not related, he clarified.
For the pilgrims, precautionary measures have been taken up by the Police Department and for their safety, adequate police personnel have been deployed at Mt. Koubru, the DIG said.
