The aunt recalled having Washima by her side till around 10 pm. She was assumed to have returned to her home around that time but her whereabouts remained unknown thereafter. Assuming that she could have eloped, family members were hoping for formal notification from the groom’s side from early morning. As the wait became tense with each hour passing by, they got wind of the news at around 11 am that the body of a girl had been found at Irong area. On suspicion, family members arrived at the place where their worst fears were confirmed, Ikram added.

He expressed his suspicion that her sister could have been killed and the body abandoned there after the assailants raped her and urged the authorities to find out the truth behind the death.

Apart from the forensic team, high ranking official of Investigative Unit for crime against woman, Imphal West, Additional SP Ratana Ngaseppam, and officer in charge of Mayang Imphal PS Joymangi visited the site and conducted on the spot enquiry. He was apprehended by womenfolk belonging to the locality of the deceased girl from Thoubal Kshetri Leikai after identifying him as possible accused and handed him over to the police. There was a brief turmoil during the handing over of the youth as some persons attempted to take matters into their hand and take Md Shahid into their custody instead. However, the police lead by Additional SP Ratana Ngaseppam, Porompat PS SDPO K.Suraj, and Mayang Imphal PS OC managed to take control of the situation very effectively.

On the other hand, Manerjan said citing information passed on by the friends of the deceased that Shahid and Washima were a couple for two years. However, other sources maintained that Shahid has a wife and three children.

A public meeting was held at Tulihal Mayai Leikai Playground where a body called JAC against the Brutal Killing of Miss Washima was set up. Convenor of the JAC Rashid Ahamed Meinam while recapitulating the proceedings of the meeting afterwards pointed out that the JAC resolved that the case be decided by a fast track court for speedy trial, and the demands of the JAC forwarded to the state government should be fulfilled within 48 hours. If the latter fails to do so agitations will be taken up including calling a state-wide bandh. A demonstration will be organised at Azad Higher Secondary School in Yairipok on January 29 too, he informed.
