Thoubal: In a shocking incident amidst lockdown and curfew, a 17-year old girl was raped by a shopkeeper last week who is residing at the same locality.
The incident is said to have taken place on Tuesday but only came to light on Saturday.
Police has taken up a case in this regard.
The accused Md. Sidik Ali was finally picked up by Thoubal district police on Sunday and after conducting necessary COVID-19 Antigen test at District Hospital Thoubal, he was found to be positive. Hence, he has been shifted to an isolation Ward of the hospital.
According to the report recieved by the media, the ill fated incident happened at Sangaiyumpham Pulleipokpi Salam Macha under Thoubal Police Station on Tuesday last at around 9:00 am and it came to light on Saturday. A public meeting was held in connection with the incident on Saturday itself and some key resolutions were also taken unanimously .
As per the report, the accused has been identified as Md. Sidiq Ali, 37, son of Md. Sadali, a resident of the same locality as mentioned above.
The report further stated that on that fateful day at around 9:00 am,the victim went to buy some edible items from the shop of the accuse which is open at his residential home. On reaching the shop, the accused lured her to come inside the shop and take her items as it was lockdown and curfew. Then, he forcibly raped her inside his shop, the reports said.
When the incident came to light on Saturday, the discontent womenfolk of the locality staged a sit in protest at Sangaiyumpham Salam macha demanding to nab the accused and give him befitting punishment at the earliest.
A public meeting was also held in this regard. The meeting organised by Mairel khul Youth Devepolment Association took some key resolutions unanimously.
It was resolved that the accused must be punished according to law by the authority concerned at the earliest. It was also resolved to request the governmnet for providing compensation to the victim. Lastly, it was also resolved that until and unless the authority concerned fulfill the demands at the earliest, public will come up with the several forms of agitations in consultation with CVOs and women organisations of the state.
